What is a healthy family dynamic?

A healthy family dynamic is one where each person feels loved, supported, safe and cared for. Being around family is where we should feel most comfortable and creating a healthy family dynamic is extremely important.

What is family counselling?

Family counselling or family counselling is a form of psychotherapy designed to help families and those in close relationships to better understand and address issues that cause distress or conflict. Some examples of these issues can include major life changes, the loss of a loved one, or mental health problems. Family counselling can also assist with your daily challenges and/or environment.

We create a safe platform for each member of the family to feel safe and heard. We help facilitate the differences within the family. Each member will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings about the issue, and their hopes for change and/or ideal outcome.

How can family counselling help?

Family counselling is about relationships and the patterns that develop within them that may lead families to struggle. We help work through those challenges and observe patterns of interaction between family members, including those that are healthy and productive and those that are “toxic” or not so helpful.

Our job is to help you change those patterns so you can create an environment that works for your family. One that leaves you feeling closer and more connected as a whole.

Through family counselling, we can:

  • Learn new and more positive ways of communication
  • Develop greater understanding and empathy for each other
  • Assist with solving family problems
  • Bring families closer and more connected
  • Build appreciation and respect for each other
  • Repair connections and strengthen relationships
  • Learn new skills and ways to manage stress and anger
  • Strengthen values and create healthy boundaries
  • Create a more supportive and caring environment
  • Develop a team approach to managing stressors
  • Reduce frustrations, misunderstandings and conflict
  • Help each member cope better overall

What if family members are refusing professional support?

It is important that the relevant family members attend family counselling as the concerns that brought your family to therapy are an indication of who needs to be involved. However, it is not uncommon for certain family members to be resistant to family therapy.

If this is the case, the therapist can work with an individual while maintaining the family counselling perspective to navigate how to manage family problems on a personal level.

Throughout the family counselling process, it is not uncommon for the therapist to meet with individuals, or with two people who share a relationship within a family unit

To help determine the approach an assessment will be conducted at the time of booking as to which family member/s are to attend the first session.
